There are many differences between trail shoes and road shoes, namely traction, rock protection, stronger ankle holds, lower heels, and gusseted tongues. A good trail shoe should have great traction to get you through whatever the mountain might throw at you. In addition, the combination of a lower heel and a stronger ankle collar should combine to reduce roll-overs, sprains, and loss of control. Many trail shoes come with a rock protection plate to prevent bruises from sharp rocks. A gusseted (sewn in) tongue is also extremely nice for keeping all that debris that you’ll be kicking up out on the trail and not in your shoe! Long live trail shoes.
